Whether you're seething with anger because you've caught your lover in bed with someone else, or you're tormented with despair because you feel devastated and alone, When Your Lover Leaves You walks you through the emotional stages of a breakup and leads you on the road to recovery. It covers topics such as when and why to call your former lover, how to battle insomnia, and who to turn to for support, while offering realistic, practical steps toward recovery. It outlines the six stages we encounter during the aftermath of a breakup: shock, hope, anger, despair, indifference, and growth. Full of reassuring advice written in the tone of a trusted friend, it offers concrete strategies for each stage, including:

Don't force yourself to sleep if you can't-listen to some soothing music, take a bath, write in a journal, or try some relaxation exercises.

Channel your impulses-volunteer for a charity mailing instead of writing to your ex-lover

Vent your anger-take a kickboxing class at the gym

Pamper yourself-treat yourself to a facial, massage, or new haircut

Set new goals-evaluate what you hope to accomplishing your personal and professional life

Richard G. Whiteside, M.S.W., family therapist, and Frances E. Steinberg, Ph.D., psychologist, have worked with distressed lovers for the past twenty-five years. They currently live in Auckland, New Zealand, where they direct training programs, collaborate on books, and provide therapy.

It's only been five years....maybe he 'll still call.

Astonishing little book - I'm not really a big fan of the self-help Dr. Phil kind of scene, but this was concrete, accurate help at a time when I desperately needed it. And what do you know, I'm better than alright now - just as it predicted! No nonsense, no complex mental models and promises of emotional miracles, just 'these things suck, it happens to every human who has every lived, and here's how to minimize the pain'.

Rick Whiteside and Frances Steinberg have written a wonderful guide to getting through some of the most difficult times people face. When Your Lover Leaves You is sensible and compassionate, and keeps you focused on the all-important realizations that not only is there life after a breakup, there are skillful ways of managing intense feelings. I recommend this book highly - it's short, it's focused, and it's practical...exactly the way it should be for people in distress who are looking for smart ways to cope with loss.

A year out from seperation I was still of a mind that one of the most miserable things one human being does to another, is betrayal. This groovy little book took me back to emotions of shock and anger and gently walked me through to a place I now cherish, freedom to do and be the person I am.
