A friend of mine new Vera Schlamm, and many years ago before her passing arranged for her to speak at our church. She was charming, enthusiastic, and full of grace. I never forgot meeting her and hearing her unique story, and was reminded recently of her book. I'm so glad I came across it again and could read more detail about her early years and her path in her faith. Her writing style reflects what I saw in her personality - cheerful, and exuberant, genuine and approachable.

Dr. Schlamm's story is one that I have loved for many years. She grew up in Germany but it wasn't easy. She was Jewish and just a child when Hitler came to power. Her parents went through years of cat-and-mouse experiences, trying to evade deportation and imprisonment - even managing to escape to Holland at one point. In the end, however, her whole family wound up in the camps and when everything was said and done, Vera lost about 10 years of her life - her whole adolescence vanished in the cruel time warp of the Nazis. Her education was abruptly cut short by several years. Her growth was stunted due to malnutrition. Her whole world was turned upside down and the book chronicles this time period very well. But then her life takes a surprising twist: she winds up in the U.S. where she becomes a successful pediatrician with a deep faith in God. I found the book to be a real page-turner and can highly recommend it to others.

Dr. Schlamm was my pediatrician in Glendale, California. She was a wonderful person and a gentle, skilled physician. I never knew her backstory then, so I was delighted to find it online, 40 years later! God bless her!
