Review Text

Power and Market is an advance in the comprehensive theory of free market economics, beyond the previous standard, which was Human Action by Ludwig von Mises and his associated research work and writing. Rothbard is able to further highlight the destructive role of the state - destructive of freedom, destructive of economic growth, destructive of the pursuit of happiness - and to formulate a logically consistent and perfectly viable economic theory without any state intervention or involvement at all. While none of us may expect to be able to aspire to the achievement of such an economy, it is important for us to understand and master the theory, so that we can all work hard to move closer towards it, while highlighting the distortions that call for such work.

This book is an important addendum to Man, Economy, and State. It explains the incompatibility of the free market and a statist government; they cannot exist together. You can have a free market and a government dedicated to protecting property rights or you can have a statist government that controls the economy to a greater or lesser degree. Many people say the US has a free-market economy; anyone who says so is either a fool or a knave. If you don't already fully understand what I'm telling you, read this book.

A great, in-depth, analysis of how the government is responsible for the "problems" of the free market. Assumes a small level of economics understanding. Rothbard uses some economics jargon. This was designed to be read after "Man, Economy and State", which would provide the requisite economics. However, if you've got a pretty good idea of how supply and demand works, you can definitely grasp this on its own.Read it to the end, chapter 6 (of 7) is the best part.

Among all of Rothbard's works, Power and Market is my personal favorite. I first read it several years ago and have found myself going back to it ever since. The most important section of the book is his analysis of taxation, about 100 pages long. Every form of taxation is discussed and thoroughly refuted on both practical and moral grounds. Highly recommended!
