"Murder Can Mess Up Your Mascara" by Selma Eichler. I love this whole series.Main character: Desiree Shapiro, PILocation: NYCDesiree, a widow with no children, lives by herself in an apartment in NYC. She is a PI. She rents a tiny office space from two attorneys, and shares their secretary, who is her friendI love Desiree's wit. She is lively. A lot of these books take place in eating joints or around meals at her place, which make the books more cozy. Listen, Desiree is a PI who is a common person like everybody else. Now to the review of this particular book:Desiree gets a call from Attorney Blossom, asking her to look into the situation of Blossom's cousin, Gordy, who has had two attacks on his life. Desiree takes the job. She talks to Gordy, and he tells her that Roger Clyne is the one who is attempting these attacks; he just needs Desiree to prove it. Gordy had to fire Roger Clyne, and that's the reason he's after Gordy. But is Gordy correct in thinking it is Roger Clyne? Or is it somebody else, with a totally different reason? So Desiree talks to people, determined to prove that Roger Clyne is the one who is attempting the attacks on Gordy's life. Desiree eats at restaurants and at her apartment, and it makes the books more cozy. Food and coffee had a cozying effect. While Desiree talks to a lot of people, and eats lots of cozy food, her personal life goes on. Her relationship with Nick tries to develop, but Nick's son, who despises Desiree, is a thorn in Desiree's side when trying to build her relationship with his dad. After talking with lots of people, Desiree uses all her clues and finds the perp. The roads of her investigating twist and the outcome is totally different than what anybody expected. Desiree is very clever to have figured it all out. Even her buddy, Tim Fielding, a law enforcement officer who is also working on the case, didn't figure it out. Only a woman would have figured out this situation. Oh, how I wish I could tell you. But you have to read the book instead. This series is definitely one of my favorite series.

Desiree Shapiro is a robust, hilarious woman always capable of being in tune with her inner psyche. Following her heart as well as her brain proved to make for a good career choice - a private investigator residing in her own little office in Manhattan. The novel is filled to the brim with coziness and days full of sleuthing, not only is Desiree a real wise crack but she also knows a thing or two about not skipping meals - her mood and spirits are often in need of good macadamia brittle ice cream, creative meals and few slices of pizza here and there. There were plenty of great food descriptions in the book and a nice recipe at the end that I am looking forward to. This whole series looks wonderful and I can't wait to see what happens next, the ending - especially considering what happened with little kid from hell - oh I can't spoil anything - made me dying for the continuation of the story. When a new case knocks on her door, Desiree is faced with a very unusual murder mystery - one that hasn't happened yet. As Gordon Curry comes to her door with information about someone wanting him dead he unknowingly sets that very motion into action and winds up dead as he himself has promised. Her only supposed lead ends up dead too and Desiree has no choice but to plunge into Curry's family and its wacky characters for some answers. On top of all her own personal life drama with Nick, whom she is seeing, and his child from a previous relationship that tried to sabotage their romance in many hilarious ways - the story is funny, full of twists and turns and always interesting. As a New Yorker I can appreciate how the story embraced the city well, the cab rides, apartments, neighbors, little restaurants and general buzz was refreshing and interesting, providing a great background to a little mystery. I found Desiree to be a great heroine, and even thought this is the twelfth book in the series, I am all ready gathering them from the beginning so I can enjoy the whole experience properly. This was a very quick, light and enjoyable read for fans of cozy mysteries and fans of good eats.- Kasia S.

Bravo for another wonderful whirl in the world of Desiree Shapiro, P.I.Murder Can Mess Up Your Mascara begins with a call from Blossom Goody, an attorney we met in a previous D.S. story. Blossom requests, between coughing and smoking, Desiree to help her Cousin, Gordie, with a problem. A big problem. It appears he is certain someone is trying to kill him. And who is that someone? Gordie believes it is none other than a former employee he had to fire due to that employees unethical behavior. That employee, Roger Clyne, is the culprit...according to Gordie that is. Gordie needs Desiree to prevent his murder before it's too late. Finally, after a long deliberation and Gordie's overwhelming charm, Desiree's agrees to find Roger Clyne and speak with him in person. Can Desiree Shapiro Find Roger in time?In this fabulously compelling addition to the D.S. series many of the characters we've grown to expect are there with us on the scene. Ellen, Desiree's favorite and only niece, Lt. Tim Fielding, the on again off again cop on the beat with Desiree getting under his skin as usual, Jackie, Desiree's secretary who doesn't know her place, and now we can add Blossom Goody to our list of fun characters. The best part of reading this Desiree Shapiro book was that each character was revealed to us in explicit detail so we were never overwhelmed by too many characters and in the end it all came together.Yes, everything did come together except for T.K.F.H. Your friend and mine that holy terror-Derek. Nick's son. Another horrific episode that blows up in desiree's face thanks to T.K.F.H.A must read for all COZY lovers.Ellen
