Review Text

  • By Dr. J V. Slavin on October 7, 2016

Layton was a great poet. His fourth wife is of the club of Bridget Jones' Diary.

  • By Sybil Rosen on April 21, 2015

This is a love story as irresistible as it was unlikely. Passionate, funny, and honest, Pottier's fascinating memoir chronicles her complex, often glamorous life - Leonard Cohen was a visitor in their home - with world-renowned Canadian poet Irving Layton, 48 years her elder. At 23, Pottier was a determined young woman hungry for art and a life deeply lived. As Layton's "fifth and final" wife, she got both, with all the attendant sorrows and joys. Written with poetic verve, the book sweeps you into their whirling-dervish love, thoroughly breaks your heart, and mends it in the end.

  • By Aaron Belasco on June 7, 2017

I would hope that the wife of a fine poet could manage passable prose, but Anna Pottier fails to make the grade.
